A branding shoot in the Scottish highlands for Moss FLoral

story & styling

Constance Spry, a pioneer in floristry, was the first to arrange florals in what we now call British garden style. She was responsible for the florals at Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding and coronation, and went on to write a small library of books on floral arranging and cookery. Her way of infusing floral design with foraged materials in natural, intuitive ways to this day has an indisputable influence on modern, organic floral design.

“One arranges flowers as the spirit moves you; to obey some inner prompting to put this colour with that, to have brilliance here, line there, a sense of opulence in this place of sparseness in that, to suit your surroundings, your mood, the weather, the occasion. In a word, to do as you please, just as, if you could, you might paint a picture”

It was at the summer home of this icon in British floral design that Adri of Moss Floral had the honor to create the florals for a Scottish Highland elopement. Inspired by the lush gardens surrounding Ard Daraigh, the stately holiday house that Constance wrote most of her book at, and the wild, rugged, open landscapes of the highland mountains and plains in autumn, Adri designed lush and textured floral arrangements for the nature-loving bride.

Arranging florals in the garden of a place that had once belonged to a woman with such profound influence on her own career and approach to her art, Adri felt a distinctive kindred connection. This place felt like it tied together her own love for flowers and nature to that of Constance, her passion to create with foraged materials felt equal to what Constance was famous for.

Constance Spry

“Time and time again I have heard people say: ‘It makes me want to do a Contance Spry’ – which means standing before a bed of hydrangeas, when summer has fled, and seeing beauty in their pallid, parchment blossoms. It means suddenly stopping in a country lane, and noting for the first time a scarlet cadenza of berries, and fitting it, in one’s mind’s eye, into a pewter vase against a white wall. It means bouts with brambles, flirtations with ferns, and carnivals with cabbages.”
